SSB recently had the honor of partnering with Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CLB) to successfully launch their first Basic Web Accessibility Tester Training Program with grant funding from the United Way.

The 10 day program started with basic web accessibility, augmented with interactive discussions, real world examples and hands-on lab exercises as the program progressed. The training concluded with a full, start to finish web accessibility audit using SSB’s Accessibility Management Program (AMP).  The integrative training program, developed and delivered by SSB, merges with the CLB mission to provide job readiness skills and create employment opportunities for their clients who are blind or visually impaired.

The first group of eight students selected by CLB successfully completed the Basic Web Accessibility Tester Training Program on October 4, 2013.  The CLB team posted a video of the graduation ceremony on YouTube – Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind & SSB BART Group Provide Web Accessibility Tester Training.

Designing the courses and content for this program wasn’t a stretch for SSB.  In many ways this was an extension of our current internal training program – close to 50% of our technical team is comprised of individuals with disabilities.   Externally, an increasing number of our clients are concerned with Section 503 compliance.  Section 503 promotes equal employment opportunities for applicants and employees with disabilities, and as it becomes more actively enforced employers need access to training programs and content that is specifically geared to this audience.
